Press Release

BASSETERRE,St.  Kitts: The Florid-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) recently announced that a high school student of St. Kitts performed extremely well in a Caribbean poster competition.

With more than 17 nations competing in the FCCA’s Children’s Environmental Poster Contest, D’Dron Griffin of Basseterre High, placed second in the senior division, which is ages between 13 to 16 years old.

According to the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, Griffin won a cash scholarship of US$1,500. Also, the art department of the Basseterre High School will be receiving US$1,500 to purchase art resources.

Griffin said he was very excited when he heard the news that he had placed.

“All I want to be is an artist,” Griffin shyly said. “That is all I think about.”

Griffin’s art teacher, Jeffery Joseph said the BHS Art Department plan on purchasing a computer for graphic designs.

“It is time we moved on a high-end type of art, and I know the students are looking forward to those lessons,” Joseph said.

Also, in the junior division Kelsia Liburd, of Nevis, placed second in that category. She too won US$1,500.

According to Laura Mori, FCCA’s research analysts, this year’s poster contests attracted entries from more than 17 nations in the Caribbean.

“It was very difficult for member for the member lines to choose the overall winner in each age category,” Mori said. “All the posters we received exemplified Caribbean excellence and expressed useful depictions of ways in which to preserve the environment.

Novelette Morton, the Human Resource and Project Manager of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, said that St. kitts’ schools need to continue to participate in this worthwhile contest.

“Certainly the St. Kitts Tourism Authority would like to congratulate D’Dron and Kelsia on their excellent posters, which to me truly exemplified the need for preservation and protection of our environment,” Morton said. “This is indeed a worthwhile competition that seeks to promote and stimulate environmental awareness among students, in hopes of stimulating the young to have that urge to protect the environment.”
