Polio Plus Weekend earns top marks for global polio eradication

Rotary President-elect Laverne Caines presents prize to winner of Super Cooper Polio Plus Golf Tournament

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH the conclusion of the Polio Plus weekend, Rotary Liamuiga President Chris English estimated the three national clubs have raised between US$5 600 and US$7 400 for the global polio battle.

Every Rotary Club in the world has been mandated by Rotary International to raise US$3 000 over three years. According to English, the Polio Plus weekend was a collaboration among the Rotary Clubs of St. Kitts, Nevis and Liamuiga to raise those funds as quickly as possible.

The weekend of activities was held over March 20-22 and consisted of catamaran cruises, the Super Cooper Polio Plus Golf Tournament and a gala dinner.

English attributed the weekend’s “great success” to a large turnout and the generosity of various sponsors. Without it, he stressed, the profit margin would have been significantly less.

“The catamaran cruise was wonderful. It was done under a pirate theme and some persons really went all out for it. Prizes were awarded for the best costumes; there was music and dancing. I’m positive everyone had a great time.

“The golf tournament was also a success; over 70 persons competed and at the end they were all delighted at how the event had gone. But I think the real highlight of the weekend was the gala dinner at the Spice Mill Restaurant in Cockleshell Bay. The band (Modern Image) and the cuisine were both fantastic. It was the Spice Mill’s inaugural event and it came off in great fashion,” said English.

The President also pointed to proceeds resulting from a dine-around programme by local restaurants and the circulation of collection by several churches as significant contributions to the overall effort.

“Now that the weekend is over, we can concentrate on our other community projects and raise the remainder of our contribution within the next two and half years. The Rotary motto is "Service above Self” and the public can expect all three clubs to continue to uphold that pledge,” English asserted.
