School Spirit on show at TDC ‘I Rep My School Rally’

By: Loshaun Dixon, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SCHOOL SPIRIT will be the main course fed at Independence Square on Friday afternoon (Mar. 13) as the TDC Group of Companies will host the second staging of the ‘I Rep My School Rally’.

High school students from across St. Kitts and Nevis will display school patriotism, as the Basseterre High School set to defend the title won last year, one week ahead of the showpiece scholastic sporting event - TDC Interschool Championships.

In an interview with SKNVibes, TDC Marketing Officer Yarayni Morton gave some background information of the event.

“Last year was the first year we did the ‘I Rep My School Rally’ and, basically, it is a pep rally amongst the high schools in the Federation that allows them to gather some hype just before the actual inter-school competition, and we invite all the high schools to participate.

“They will come up with a chant or cheer or series of the two that encompasses school spirit. All high schools in the Federation have been granted a half day to allow them to participate in the rally.”

She explained how the competition will be staged.

“There are two rounds, the high school spirit cheer and chant segment where they would have an opportunity to highlight all the things that make their school unique. And then they will have a second round, which is the TDC Jingle Competition where they will have one minute to give their version of what they think of the TDC Group of Companies.”

She indicated that thus far confirmation was received from Basseterre High School, Washington Archibald High School, Cayon High School, Verchild’s High School and the Charles E Mills Secondary School.

“We are waiting on confirmation from the two high schools in Nevis and Saddlers has advised9 they are not able to participate.”

Morton also indicated what would be up for grabs by the schools in this competition.

“We have not allocated the prizes as yet, because last year we set a prize and the winning school already had one of the items. So this year what we are going to do...we are going to allow a value of up to $2000 and the school will let us know what it is exactly what they want that we could help them with.”

The TDC marketing official then reflected on last year’s event.

“Last year was huge! We anticipated a sizable crowd but nothing like what turned out. Last year the Square was packed, traffic came to a halt and we had to ask the police to assist us in controlling the traffic.”

She then extended an invitation for the general public to attend the rally.

“For them, it is a chance to come out and support their Alma Mater, the school that their children go to. It builds a nice friendly spirit even though it is competitive. A lot of these schools are still friends at the end of the day,” she added.
