Catholic School retain Athletics Champs title

By: Loshaun Dixon, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Immaculate Conception Catholic School (ICCS) have retain their title as the CenPos Private Primary School Athletics Champions in convincing fashion, winning 18 gold medals and beating their closest rival by a six-medal count held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium.

In a close competition with all five participating schools having a shot at winning the event, ICCS showed their class by winning eight of the 10 relay races leaving their competitors in the dust.

Leading the charge for ICCS was Rafique Morson, who captured the Under-13 Boys 200 and 400 metres and played a great role in the team’s 4x100m and Medley Relay victory. He was also third in the 100 metres.

On the distaff side, Shakira Browne of that school dominated the Under-11 sprints winning the 100 and 200 metres while placing third in the 400 metres.

Azariah Webbe of Maurice Hillier was victorious in the Under-9 Girls 60 and 160 meters.

A high jump battle ensued between Zahara James and Zauhn Lewis, both of whom cleared 1.20m. However, James did so on her first attempt while Lewis did it on her second; therefore, James was declared winner of the U-13 Girls High Jump.

Lewis however came back and won the Under-13 Girls 200 and 100 metres and led her school to victory in the 4x100m Relay.
A similar situation occurred in the in the Under-13 Boys High Jump as William Sharpe, Aushi Flemming, Kadeem Stanley and Kaidrian Ottley all cleared 1.20m.

However, Stanley and Ottley had more attempts at 1.20m than Sharpe and Flemming who made the height on their second attempt, while Stanley and Ottley did it on their third and final attempt.

In the Under- 9 Girls 4x100m Relay, a comical event took place where the starting athlete from Maurice Hillier accidentally ran into the wrong lane and at the first handover could not find the person to whom she should give the baton, and she kept on running. The same thing happened on the second leg while she was still leading the race, but she seemingly ran out of gas and was passed by her competitors. She finally handed over the baton on the final leg.

This year was the second staging of the championships with five schools. The participating schools were the Immaculate Conception Catholic School, Maurice Hillier Memorial School, Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, George Moody Stuart School and Ski Academy.
