Deputy PM cheers on primary schools athletic meet

    Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 12, 2015 (SKNIS): Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Honourable Shawn Richards made a welcomed appearance at the second annual CenPOS Private Primary School Athletic Meet at the Silver Jubilee Stadium on Tuesday (March 10). 

     

    Richards said that his ministry is committed to supporting youth to excel at whatever discipline they choose, sports being no exception. 
     
    “Right now you are standing on the Kim Collins Pavilion. The name alone of this pavilion should be an indication to you that sports is a vehicle that can be used to achieve not only your educational objectives but also to excel in sports and to be recognized nationally regionally and internationally.”
     
    Acting Director of Sports, Jeffrey Hazel recognized the combined talents of teachers and coaches from various schools in helping to shape the nation’s future athletes.
     
    “This event was organized to expose young aspiring athletes from private primary schools to a higher level of competition,” said Hazel. “The CenPOS Private Primary school track and Field championship is another birthplace of our track and field heroes because these games continue to introduce our very young athletes to the passion and spirit of track and field competitions.” 
     
    Hazel further stated that the event is part of a much larger vision.
     
    “I believe with all my heart that these games will help to shape us as a people with the understanding that we are all team players for an organization with a much broader vision than our schools.”
     
    The meet was additionally sponsored by Island Purified Water, iRep SKN, Department of Sports. At the end of the meet, The Immaculate Conception Catholic School (ICCS) defended their title as CenPos Champions with Seventh Day Adventist Primary and Maurice Hillier Memorial Primary following as second and third respectively.
