BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DEFENDING champions of the TDC Inter-School Championships, Charles E Mills Secondary School  (CEMSS) are well on their way to regain the title they have won 21 times, ending day one of the 2015 Championships with five gold - three ahead of their nearest competitor - on a day when only 10 gold medals were up for grabs.

Yesterday (Mar. 20), the Silver Jubilee Stadium was once again the venue for action as 12 learning institutions embarked on a journey to put their athletic ability to the test against counterparts from the competing schools.

The afternoon also saw six new records on the 10-event day, with CEMSS accounting for three of them.

Earlene Webbe of CEMSS won the Girls Under-16 Long Jump in 5.61m. She was then followed by her male partner Dimetre Browne who won the Boys Under-16 Long Jump in 6.36m. That school’s Jermaine Francis was seemingly jumping by himself in the Under-18 Boys event when he cleared the bar at 2.04 metres, setting a new record which is also a World Junior Games qualifying height.

Other records were broken by Tywanya Robinson of Basseterre High School who leapt 1.62 metres in the Under-18 Girls High Jump and Dejorn Bernier of Verchild’s High School with a throw of 52.18 metres in the Under-18 Boys Javelin, while Ashika Williams of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College cleared a distance of 11.65 metres in the Under-20 Girls Shot Put.
The moderate-size crowd at the Silver Jubilee Stadium also had a sneak peak of the 400 metres as preliminary heats in that event were held.
The March Pass of athletes and Opening Ceremony of the games were respectively held following the eight events.
The Stadium came alive with excited spectators cheering the athletes from their respective schools as they marched past displaying unique marching styles.
