Press Release

March 26th, 2015 -- THE international community will adopt new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a Special Summit of the United Nations on Sustainable Development scheduled for September 2015 in New York.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) subregional headquarters is strongly supporting the regional effort to identify among these SDGs, those representing the most crucial development challenges facing the Caribbean, with a view to consolidating support and action towards addressing them.

ECLAC will facilitate the consideration of Caribbean SDGs at a technical meeting of key stakeholders including intergovernmental organizations and civil society.

The meeting, to be held on Friday 27 March at ECLAC Port of Spain, will be attended by Caribbean experts and will contribute to an ongoing effort to shape, within the United Nations Post-2015 Development Agenda, sustainable development priorities unique to the Caribbean experience.

Some of these challenges are well known; low resilience to the threat of climate change, limited resources to respond to extreme events, low growth and productivity, high youth unemployment, the need for greater social protection, and the challenges posed by changing population dynamics such as ageing, and the increased prevalence of non-communicable diseases.

The meeting involves the participation of key regional partners, notably the Caribbean Community Secretariat (CARICOM).
