Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 02, 2015 (SKNIS): Prime Minister Dr. The Honorable Timothy Harris made a welcomed appearance at the Gulf Insurance Primary Schools Championship Games at the Elquemedo Willett Park in Nevis on Wednesday (April 01).
Dr Harris, who was joined by Premier of Nevis The Honourable Vance Amory and other members of the federal government, said he sees the competition as more than a sporting event but also a sign that the federation is heading towards a prosperous future.
“It has always been a fun experience to come and watch the young people do their best and strive for excellence on the field and I certainly feel moved and inspired by their efforts…. I think whenever we see the talent that is being expressed, the potential, the enthusiasm, the discipline – those attributes help to project a country that is going places and whose future one can depend on because largely, that future will depend on the degree to which young people want excellence and to make a name for themselves. And all these things they get out of sports and a day like this.”
Premier Amory, himself a former athlete, shared similar sentiments, suggesting that youth-centered sporting events are beneficial in promoting the federation abroad.
“I think it is good to have this kind of involvement of our young people as a focal point for any promotion of a country because where young people are doing well it speaks to longevity and it is for us as government to capitalize on it and get our athletes out there, so that those who are the main players in athletics can see what we are made of.”
The prime minister took the opportunity to encourage citizens both resident and abroad, to contribute to the overall development of the federation and pledged his government’s full support to all who are so inclined.
“We have a beautiful federation and lots of opportunities to build and develop it and each one can play a role in that development from the simplest to the greatest among us. And whether you are at home or abroad, the question of what you can do for your country is faced by each one. Both islands have progressed but the journey is still miles to go. And we would want others to join in opportunities for prosperity. This government will give the fullest possible support to our people wherever they are. We need more skills; we want to encourage those in the diaspora to come home and help us build. Come home and help us develop a St.Kitts and Nevis of which all of us can be proud”.
