Team SKN looking to build on performances at World Relays

2014 World Cup Relay team

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER successfully participating in the inaugural IAAF World Relays, St. Kitts and Nevis will be looking to build on their performance when they won  silver in the 4x200m race.

The quartet of Antoine Adams, Brijesh Lawrence, Lestrod Roland and Allaister Clarke upset the odds by winning silver in the 4x200m and were challenging for the Gold until Yohan Blake, with a strong anchor leg, powered Jamaica to gold and a new world record.

Speaking with this publication, Public Relations Officer of the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA) Evris Huggins stated what the team's goals are at this year's World Relays.

"We are looking to qualify in the 4x100m for the 2015 World Championships that is scheduled for Beijing in August. That is our main objective, but we are also looking to improve on our performances in the 4x20m and 4x100m from 2015.

Huggins commented on the team's preparation ahead of the games.

"It has been going quite well! The athletes have been in camp ahead of the championships. We also had a few morning and evening practice sessions under the conditions of the relays.

“We were also able to use some of the junior athletes who were successful at the CARIFTA Games and were a part of the 4x100m relay squad.”

He further stated that chemistry amongst team members is high and preparations have been better than in 2014.

“As you are aware, we have two of our junior athletes who are also a part of the World Relays quad and we use that opportunity to have dual sessions with the both so they can learn from each other.

“From our vantage point the chemistry is quite well and it seems like we are a lot more prepared that we were in 2014.”

The PRO was asked if he were confident that the team could repeat the feat achieved in 2014.

“The confidence has to start amongst the team itself, and the confidence level is quite high amongst them. The coach is optimistic and we just wait for them to go out and perform.”

Earlier this week, the SKNAAA selected a team of seven athletes to represent the Federation at the 2015 World Relay Championships.

The team is made up of Antoine Adams, Jason Rogers, Brijesh Lawrence, Allistar Clarke, Lestrod Huggins, Hakeem Huggins and Warren Hazel.

The team will be led by head coach Lonzo Wilkinson.

St. Kits and Nevis would first be in action in the 4x100m at 7:45 p.m. tomorrow (May 2) and at 9:52 if successful in getting to the Finals.

On Sunday they will participate in the 4x200m at 7:00p.m. and the Finals at 9:06p.m.
