Fifth Anger Management Class Graduates in Her Majesty's Prison

By: Dan MacMullin, Press Release

Wednesday, May 6th, saw Operation Future conclude it’s fifth 10 week anger management program in Her Majesty’s Prison.  This session saw 15 students complete the program bringing the number of inmates who have completed Anger Management training to over 100 since Operation Future introduced the program to Her Majesty’s Prison as part of the rehabilitation process. The program came out of Operation Future’s conference in 2012 and our partnership with the John Howard Society of Canada who trained us in their Anger Management Program, following the training session we adapted the program so it would fit the needs and resources available at Her Majesty’s Prison and launched it as part of the Rehabilitation through Music and Art Program in partnership with Her Majesty’s Prison.  During the 10 week period the students study topics such as

    • Anger as an emotion
    • Anger styles – positive and negative
    • Where do we learn anger behavior and styles
    • Relationship between beliefs/attitudes and behaviors
    • How men are conditioned to express emotion
    • Self-esteem and assertiveness
    • Characteristics of miscommunication and responding to defensive and and aggressive persons
    • Problem solving techniques (D.E.C.I.D.E) Define the problem, Examine, Collect alternatives, Investigate Consequences, Do the action, Evaluate the results.
    • Stress management – coping strategies.

This program is part of Operation Future’s holistic approach to addressing crime.  Operation Future is currently working to develop an advance Anger Management Course for those who have completed the basic course. The advance course will have the objective of introducing the students to numerous scenario’s drawn from prison and every day life so those involved can practice taking what they have learned and applying it to life.
