Fire destroys building at Rawlins Plantation Inn

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE of the buildings which forms part of the Rawlins Plantation Inn, located in the St. Paul’s area, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon (May 8).

Fire Chief Everette O’Garro informed SKNVibes that the Sandy Point Fire Department responded to a report about 4:56 p.m. and, on arrival at the scene, discovered that the building that housed the restaurant and dining area was engulfed in flames.

He said because of the magnitude of the fire, assistance was requested and received from both the Tabernacle and Basseterre Stations.

O’Garro also said that the teams worked arduously to extinguish the blaze and because they had no access to a water source in that area, one or more of the tenders had to journey into St. Paul’s Village to replenish their supply and head back to the task.

The fire was totally extinguished in about two and a half to three hours.

The cause of the fire, the Fire Chief indicated, is undetermined but the two-storey structure was totally destroyed.

He said a man identified as Kevin Walwyn, who appears to be the custodian of the property, was met there and questioned by the fire officers. It is not clear, however, as to whether or not he was the one who made the report.
