GIS Press Release

Anegada, BVI - National AIDS Programme Coordinator Dr. Ronald W. McAnaney will visit Anegada this month for several activities designed to raise awareness about sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV/AIDS.

His upcoming visit to that sister island will form part of a territorial education programme.

Dr. McAnaney said sexual health and HIV workshops for primary and secondary schools have been confirmed for Friday, April 17, at the Claudia Creque Educational Centre from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., while free HIV testing and counselling will also be offered to the public from 1:00 until 7:00 p.m., at the Anegada Public Health Clinic.

The National AIDS Programme Coordinator added that sexual health and HIV workshops for adults on the island will be held on April 18 at the Emile Dunlop Community Centre from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. There will also be free HIV testing and counselling at the Anegada Public Health clinic from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., on that day.

“We hope to raise awareness of sexual health issues related to sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV. These upcoming activities will provide the community with information and prevention education techniques that they can use to protect themselves and reduce the transmission of sexually transmitted infections,” he said.

This month’s activities on Anegada follow a programme called Know Your HIV Status – Get Tested, which was developed a few years ago. Similar activities will be held on Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, and Tortola during the year. They are organised by the National AIDS Programme, the Ministry of Health and Social Development, the BVI Health Services Authority, and community volunteers.
