World Metrology Day 2015: Measurements and Light

Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts,  2015-05-20 – The St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards (SKNBS), the institution that is charged with the responsibility to manage all metrology activities in the Federation will join with the International Metrology Community in celebrating World Metrology Day, on 20th May 2015. The theme for this year is " Measurements and Light ".

World Metrology Day is an established annual event that is celebrated around the world to highlight the importance and impact of measurements on our daily lives.

The Metre convention was signed on 20 May, 1875 , the date now celebrated as World Metrology Day. This convention is a treaty that created the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and set the framework for global collaboration of the science of measurements and its industrial and commercial application. Hence, it provides the basis for the International Metrology System.

The theme ‘Measurements and Light’ was chosen to align with the UNESCO International Year of Light and Light-based technologies 2015 (IYL 2015), a global initiative designed to highlight the key role light and optical technologies play in our daily lives and their importance for our future and for the sustainable development of the society we live in.

Metrology plays a central role in enabling the application of light-based technologies, and in turn, light is at the heart of many of the most important new elements of leading-edge measurement technologies.

Metrology is an old science that has evolved over many years to its present stage where it is distinguish by the development in scientific metrology and legal metrology. Scientific metrology deals with the various chains of measurement, calibration and accreditation while legal metrology focus is on measurement results that are used in official and commercial transactions. Legal metrology directly affects consumers and as the name implies requires compliance to Government regulations.
The St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards  was formally established by the Bureau of Standards Act, 1999, and is mandated to develop and implement national standards and adopt  regional or international standards where necessary. The Bureau also holds the national standards for metrology (mass, volume, length, etc.) and is responsible for advising the Government on technical matters as they relate to health and safety of its consumers. Responsibilities also include food and water analyses, the verification of all scales, balances and other measuring devices within the Federation and facilitating development of local industry and commerce.
