BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CONTRARY to the belief of many that the malicious and unjustified shootings which had claimed 15 lives and injuries to a number of individuals had ended yesterday, another shooting incident occurred this afternoon (May 26) but, fortunately, the intended victim escaped unscathed.

Information reaching this publication stated that reports of gunfire were heard today at about 1:20 p.m. in McKnight.

This was confirmed by the Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Lyndon David, who said that they had received a reported of a shooting incident at Upper Shaw Avenue and a number of officers had responded.

“Initial investigations revealed that a young man was sitting on an empty plot of land at Upper Shaw Avenue when he was attacked by an unknown assailant who discharged a loaded firearm at him, David said.

He also said that the intended victim had fled the scene and the assailant made his getaway in a white motorcar.

“No one was reported injured to the police,” he added.

The Police PRO gave the gunman’s description as dark complexioned, five feet seven inches tall and of medium built. The dreadlocks gunman wearing a white T-shirt, a pair of 3/4 blue jeans and a Rasta Tam.

In an appeal to the public, Inspector David said: “Anyone who has information pertaining to this incident is ask to contact the Violent Crime Unit (VCU) at 467-1886, 467-1887, or 467-1888, the nearest police station, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 (TIPS). Remember, you do not have to provide your personal information and you may be eligible to receive a reward.”

Over the weekend, two young men were hospitalised following separate shooting incidents.

The first one occurred at approximately 7:45 on Sunday night in Nevis, where Sheldon Newton was ambushed by two men when he left his Stoney Grove home to go on an errand; while the second incident took place yesterday shortly after 2:00 p.m. in the National Bank’s automated teller machine (ATM) kiosk in the vicinity of TDC Home and Building Depot on the Frigate Bay Road.

The victim, 20-year-old Jason Morton, was shot to the buttocks and one of his legs. And like Morton, he too is hospitalised.
