BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DEPUTY LEADER of the People’s Labour Party, Sam Condor has been named among five new Diplomats and will hold the appointment of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Nations; a position once held by Attorney-at-Law Delano Bart under the former Labour Administration.

This announcement was made yesterday (May 27) by Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris during a press conference in the Parliamentary Lounge at Government Headquarters.

Dr. Harris declared that his Team Unity Government needed new leadership in the Federation’s foreign Embassies, Missions and Consulates, and that a number of nominations were made to fill the various offices.

In keeping with that need, Dr. Harris said his Cabinet had agreed to a number of Diplomatic appointments, and Condor was the first on the list that he named.

“Mr. Sam Condor, to be designated Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, will be our representative to the United Nations. This appointment will fill, of course, the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. Delano Bart, QC.

Dr. Harris stated that Condor, a former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs under the Dr. Douglas-led Government, has the requisite knowledge, experience and qualifications to fill that vacancy and to deliver results from the first day of him taking office.

“There are several important issues on the United Nations' agenda and, with Mr. Condor’s leadership, we expect excellent results.”

The Federation’s first female registered medical practitioner and ‘Messenger of Christ’, Dr. Thelma Phillip-Browne was the second individual named. She, too, will be one of the country’s Ambassadors.

“Dr. Thelma Phillip-Browne is being designated Ambassador to the United States of America. She will be resident in Washington, DC.

“Dr. Browne is a well known medical practitioner and Dermatologist with a wide range of experience in the delivery of health services. She is a professional woman who will make a difference in our diplomacy with our more significant international partner, the United States of America,” Dr. Harris said.

Another named Ambassador is Dr. Everson Hull, who was designated Ambassador to the Organisation of American States.

Describing the new appointee, Dr. Harris said; “Dr. Hull is an academic, whose extensive work in the field of Economics, has cemented his value to the Nevis Island Administration in the area of Economic Policy Formulation.”

And two other individuals who are to hold diplomatic positions are Shirley Skerritt and Verna Morris.

“Ms. Shirley Skerritt is a career Diplomat formally attached to the OECS Missions and Embassies in Brussels. She has been confirmed as High Commissioner to Canada, based in Ottawa.

“Verna Morris is a career Foreign Affairs Officer. She has been assigned to Cuba as Charge d'Affaires. Ms. Morris has served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for over 10 years. She is a graduate of the Universities of Cuba and Mexico. Her appointment will fill the void created there by the recall of Ambassador Douglas.

Prime Minister Harris informed that closure to the other necessary appointments would take place following consultation by Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Mark Brantley with himself and other members of the Cabinet.

In response to the question of who would replace Alex Woodley at the Consulate in Dubai, Dr. Harris said: “We have not yet named such a person. We are giving study to that and shortly we would. But that is provided for within the ambit of one of the pieces of legislation.”
