BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A bus driver was taken into police custody following Sunday’s (Jun. 14) road fatality and the police have reported that an autopsy was performed on the deceased.

According to a police communiqué issued today (Jun. 16), the incident took place at about 7:00 p.m. at Main Street, Newton Ground.

It further informs that according to initial investigations, “motor omni bus H1766 driven by Leroy James of Saddlers Village was travelling towards Sandy Point direction when he struck a pedestrian, Mr Laughton Lake of Newton Ground. Mr. Lake was transported to the J.N.F General Hospital by the E.M.S where he succumbed to his injuries”.

According to the release, James was taken into custody and is said to be “assisting with the investigations”.

It however did not indicate when he was taken into custody or if he remains in custody at this stage.

An autopsy was conducted on Lake’s body the day after the incident and, according to police, it concluded that his death was as a result of “hypovolemic shock due to multiple traumatic lesions as a result of a traffic accident”.

The post mortem was conducted by resident pathologist Dr. Adrian Nunez.

“The High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police takes this opportunity on behalf of the rank and file of the Force to extend condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the late Laughton Lake,” the communiqué read.

The incident is being investigated by officers of the Sandy Point Police Station.
