Nevis Power Plant Kickoff

    Charlestown, Nevis - On April 7th and 8th  West Indies Power (Nevis) Ltd. (WIP)  launched the development of the 10MW geothermal power plant on the island of Nevis. Senior members of the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) and the Nevis Electricity Company Ltd (NEVLEC) met with the management of West Indies Power (Nevis) Ltd  and with representatives of the Export Import Bank of the United States (EXIM), the proposed financier of the Nevis Geothermal Power Plant Project.

     

    The Nevis Geothermal Power Plant Project is the construction of a geothermal power plant at Spring Hill, Nevis, that will use two 5.8MW TurboMax 1000 single flash condensing turbines and associated equipment, to produce 10 MW’s of electrical power. The Project will sell all of its electrical power to NEVLEC who will distribute it throughout the island of Nevis. The geothermal power plant is projected to be in operation approximately mid 2010.

     

    Also present at the launching meeting were representatives from the firms which will build the geothermal power plant namely  The Industrial Company (TIC), the project administrator and construction company, Process Unlimited Inc (ProU), the engineering company for the Project, TurboCare Inc. (a division of Siemens), the supplier of the turbines, generating sets and controls, Geothermal Development Associates (GDA), the supplier of the balance of plant, including the condensers and electrical equipment, and Geothermal Support Services (GSS), the environmental consultant for the Project.

     

    Kerry McDonald, CEO of West Indies Power (Nevis) Ltd stated “ Everyone associated with the Nevis Geothermal Project is excited that the power plant is now being developed. This 10MW geothermal power plant will be the first geothermal power plant in the Eastern Caribbean and will make Nevis the first 100% green island in the world. It will provide clean, low cost, reliable,  renewable energy to the people of Nevis”.

     

    West Indies Power (Nevis) Ltd. is the Nevis operating subsidiary of West Indies Power Holding B.V. an independent power producer specializing in the development of geothermal energy in the Caribbean. The company began its geothermal development drilling program on Nevis in January 2008.
