Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 02, 2015 (SKNIS): As the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force charts the way forward, ensuring the human resources needed to lead its fight against crime in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis will be critical.
Recruitment to the police force is ongoing with training for new members to commence shortly. This step is in tandem with remarks made on June 30 by the Minister of National Security, Prime Minister Dr. The Honourable Timothy Harris during parliament, where he said, “The Police Force is also seeking ways to reduce the number of Police Officers who are at the time engaged in duties that could be done by civilians.” He said currently there are police officers serving in duties that take them away from policing, some of those positions include guard duty and the like.
In addition to the force’s recruitment efforts, the Police Force is in the process of recruiting additional Island Constables to bolster their numbers, and so too will the civilianization of the Immigration Department. “My government is committed to making the transition. Hence, the necessary preparations will be made and this will be a budget item for the 2016 Budget.
I can say therefore that early in 2016, the Immigration Department will be placed under civilian control, with a collaborative relationship with the Police, this will allow for the return of officers from some static and administrative positions to the beat,” said Prime Minister Harris.
According to Acting Commissioner Stafford Liburd, the civilianization of the Immigration Department and other support functions will return approximately 25 officers to “beat” duties.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Harris also pointed out that the majority of the current applicants to the Police Force are females and encouraged eligible young men to apply.
