Restaurant Week Vibes: Sunset Cafe

By: Adam Anderson, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AS I think back to the very premiere of Restaurant Week, I made sure to taste everything. I had taken note of a couple of local favorites; one being the Breadfruit Balls dipped in their special sauce.

Boy, were those balls good…Uhm, maybe that may be taken out of context. No, but on a serious note I gotta tell you that I had gone for fourths.

They were so good! I blindly went to taste everything the chefs had to offer neglecting the names of each restaurant; so it came to my pleasant surprise when I heard you can find them at Sunset Cafe right off of the strip of Timothy Beach. That’s just a walk away from where I live!

As I arrive at the location, I noticed people chilling out, all cool sipping on drinks and tanning out by the shore. Off the yonder there were ships floating off in the distance wading, as a boat was drifting into the dock. I noticed the water crashing against the rocks as seagulls swooped in to grab their brunch. It was as if they were telling me it was time to eat...Quite a venue to grab a drink and some appetisers.

To the left is a bar and lining the shelves were liquors of all variety. I noticed my reflection in the mirrors behind the bottles. As I walked into the yellow and teal gallery, a waiter greeted me and encouraged me to find a seat anywhere I’d like.

I immediately found a spot near a walnut tree and asked the waiter for their favourite drink. I began with a strawberry mango daiquiri garnished with a cherry on top. It was sweet and sour with a kick only rum provides. I love tangy anything, so it hit the spot.

The waiter returned with a menu and I quickly assured her I knew what I was having… BREADFRUIT BALLS. They are the perfect anytime appetiser when liming by the shore. I continued to sip on the daiquiri. Refreshingly cold as the flavour shifted from mango to strawberry in a blend that complemented the moment…The Breadfruit Balls were ready!

“Your Breadfruit Balls with a tangy mango sauce we call the Tropical Sunset Sauce,” the waiter proclaimed.

Without hesitation I grabed a toothpick and submerged it in sauce…I already knew what I was doing.

Heaven! Just pure heaven. The breadfruit was so moist and the flavours of sweet, sour and savory overwhelmed my senses with a familiar taste that brought me back to the first time I had them. I could have tasted how they blended and mashed the breadfruit with onions and peppers. It was a mango tango dance between the sauce and the spherical deep-fried breadfruit.

Curious, I then took another bite, this time just the breadfruit by itself. It was incredibly delicious as I washed it down with another healthy sip of daiquiri. Salty and ooey and gooey like cheese melting between the fried breaded goodness. In fact, it reminded me of cheese…and I LOVE cheese.

Finally, as I devoured the last bite, I decided to sit down and enjoy a coffee with dollop of cream. It was the perfect way to end such a decadent meal. The coffee was good and strong, just the way I like it. I laid back and enjoyed the view.

I recommend that if you are ‘chillaxn’ by the shore of Timothy Beach, make sure to stop by Sunset for a drink and the world’s best Breadfruit Balls.
