U-23 St. Kitts National Netball Stars: Shekola Wilson BIO

By: St. Kitts Netball Association, Press Release

An initiative by The Department of Community Development in collaboration with the St. Kitts Netball Association

July 10th, 2015 -- St. Kitts and Nevis is set to host this year’s ECCB/OECS U-23 Netball Tournament Saturday 18th - Wednesday 22 July, 2015 at The Pamella Tyson Netball Stadium, Basseterre St. Kitts.

    Name: Shekola Wilson

    Age: 19

    Which community do you represent?
“I’m from the proud community of Cayon also known as Green Valley.”

How long have you been playing netball?
“I’ve been playing netball for a little over eight (8) years.”

How long have you been playing netball for the St. Kitts National Team?
“I began playing National Netball at the age of 12 when I made the St. Kitts U-13 Team, which is seven (7) years.”

How did you become interested in the sport?
“During the Physical Education sessions, most girls played netball.  That was when I realized I was good at the sport and I continued playing.”

Has your involvement in netball impacted your life positively in any way? How?
“My involvement in netball has kept me fit and healthy as well as it has also boosted my self confidence.  I wouldn’t abandon netball for any other sport; though I’m actively engaged in other sports, netball was my first love.”

What do you recommend can be done to improve netball here in St. Kitts?
“Netball needs to be advertised more in the Federation and there is need for out of season ball-o-ramas.  Yes, there are some mini leagues which exist but the public seldom knows what is happening as far as netball is concerned.”

If you are a member of the St. Kitts Netball Association and can implement one project, what would it be?
“I’ll get more males actively involved in netball.  I’ll also assist them with becoming more knowledgeable about the sport and allow them to challenge the females so their level of performance will increase.”

How do you see community involvement impacting the performance of our U-23 National Team?
“It is very important the communities across the Federation come out in their numbers to support our team, there is no doubt that we’ll perform to the best of our abilities.  We need all the support that we can get!”

What message would you like to relay the sponsors the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and the general public?
“I would like to thank E.C.C.B. for their continued support because without their sponsorship, the league would not have been possible.  I’ll use this opportunity to invite my fellow Green Valley massive to come out and support me, support our team; as a matter of fact, I’m inviting everyone to come on out to the games.  Your support will make a major difference!”
