GIS Press Release

Roadtown, Tortola - The BVI Fire and Rescue Service is notifying the public that the Territory is experiencing a dry period and persons should refrain from control burning.

“During this dry period the community is reminded that unless there is an extreme circumstance that requires control burning, persons should refrain from this activity until rain begins to fall again and the grass and trees return green and lush,” stated Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Leando Stoutt.

Examples of control burning include backyard or pasture burning.  “The high wind condition and the dry period could easily contribute to these fires getting out of control, resulting in the loss of life or damage to property.” Mr. Stoutt further stated.

Although control burning is discouraged at this time, when carrying out this practice, persons should have a fire fighting medium on site and adequate water to prevent fires burning out of control.

Persons are also asked to contact the Fire and Rescue Department for advice and more information.

Persons who conduct backyard or pasture burning should proceed with extreme caution as it can be a nuisance to neighbours, adversely impact the environment, affect persons with asthma, cause respiratory problems and contribute to global warming.

The Fire and Rescue Service is committed to protecting life and property from the effects of fire and all other man-made and natural accidents and disasters.
