U-23 St. Kitts National Netball Stars: Tarren Tweed BIO

By: St. Kitts Netball Association, Press Release

An initiative by The Department of Community Development in collaboration with the St. Kitts Netball Association

July 13th, 2015  --  St. Kitts and Nevis is set to host this year’s ECCB/OECS U-23 Netball Tournament Saturday 18th - Wednesday 22 July, 2015 at The Pamella Tyson Netball Stadium, Basseterre St. Kitts.

    Name: Tarren Tweed

    Age: 16

    Which community do you represent?
“I’m representing the community of Saddlers.”

How long have you been playing netball?
“I’ve been playing netball for over six (6) years now.”

How long have you been playing netball for the St. Kitts National Team?
“This is actually my first year playing for the National Team and my level of excitement is very high.”

How did you become interested in the sport?
“My passion for netball began in Primary School during Physical Education sessions.  My coach asked me to try-out at shooting position because of my height and I’ve been playing in that position ever since.”

Has your involvement in netball impacted your life positively in any way? How?
“Netball has contributed to my overall improvement towards my health and fitness.  I have benefitted so much that I have lost weight because of my constant exercising whilst playing netball.”

What do you recommend can be done to improve netball here in St. Kitts?
“There is need for netball to be revived in the various communities across St. Kitts and Nevis.  This will also see new individuals gaining a passion for the sport.  I think it is time that we decentralize the game to boost participation.”

If you are a member of the St. Kitts Netball Association and can implement one project, what would it be?
“I’ll implement Umpires Boot Camp.  There is a shortage of umpires and I also think umpires are not respected as well.  If more players are trained umpires and they get the opportunity to witness what it is like for umpires during games, then they’ll be more respectful to the umpires while they are on the court.”

How do you see community involvement impacting the performance of our U-23 National Team?
“Community support will make a huge difference and will be influential to our performance.  It is my hope that we play in front of a huge home crowd daily as this support will push us to play harder and boost our level of play.  I don’t think we receive enough support from the public as far as netball is concerned and this might be the opportunity to change all of this!”

What message would you like to relay the sponsors the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and the general public?
“I would use this opportunity to express gratitude to E.C.C.B. for their continuous support in netball.  To my community members of Saddlers and all other communities, I would like to invite you to the Pamella Tyson Stadium from 18th – 22nd July to witness a competitive E.C.C.B. /O.E.C.S. tournament as we promise to perform with passion.  Also, thanks to the Department of Community Development for assisting us with showcasing our talent to the public and with advertising netball.”
