BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT was an emotional and somber atmosphere yesterday afternoon (Jul. 13) at the Patsy Allers Playfield where friends, loved-ones and family members gathered for the funeral service of popular businessman Michael ‘Ela’ Glasford.

The 54-year-old’s life had ended on the evening of June 30, 2015 after being shot multiple times while outside a shop in Dorset Village.

His death left a void in the hearts of those with whom he came in contact, as was evidenced by the tributes which were paid.

His eldest child, Akimba Demming, expressed, “My father has relinquished his mortal frame and is now in a state of eternal peace with Jah. Our father was a pillar of strength and wisdom. He made the reality of survival for his family. He was prudent in his preparation towards business, moral, ethical and spiritual was his hall mark stand.”

One of his younger sons, Glassil, recalled the emotions he felt having been informed of his father’s unfortunate demise.

“On the night of Tuesday 30th June, I was awakened to some devastating news. I still feel like I’m in a daze. Daddy, words can’t begin to express the depth of my sadness that your death has brought me. I know for a time we had our ups and downs, but there was never a moment that I didn’t appreciate the fact that you were my birthright. I will miss you daily, especially your encouraging words and those bonding moments that we share as a family. I know you’re in a place where you are resting and watching over your flock, so rest well until we meet again. May your soul rest in eternal peace…”

Another of his children – Tessa – said she has an appreciation for the sacrifices her father made to ensure that she and her siblings are taken care of.

“Daddy, now that I’m older, I have a better idea of everything you did for me when I was growing up. You worked extremely hard to make sure my siblings and I were happy and healthy and had everything we needed. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to thank you enough for all you’ve done for us. I love you in life and death.”

His sister Mercelese (Beverly) recalled and cherishes the bond she had shared with Glasford, noting that he was one who had her back “and I had yours without prejudice…”

“Thanks for seeing me out. My heart is able to rejoice because I was able to tell you on a regular basis ‘I love you lots’ and hear those words echoed back clearly many times over. I promise to share this bond with my nieces and nephews as we learn to live now without you and your infectious laugh that warmed all our hearts. No more will we hear that enthusiastic ‘wah going on?’ or ‘wah happening?’”

Several individuals offered tributes at Glasford’s funeral service and he was glowingly spoken of and praised as “the glue” that kept the family together, a very loving individual who showed love to all with whom he came in contact, a hard-working man and one of few words.

Tribute was also paid to the Cool Profile Limited’s owner and taxi operator by the St. Kitts Taxi Association of which he was a member.

The officiating minister was Bishop Matthew Hepburn and Glasford was eulogised by Carol Boddie.

Following the service, which was held under the guard of police officers and Defence Force soldiers, who were armed to the teeth, Michael Lloyd Senrick ‘Ela’ Glasford was interred at the Springfield Cemetery.
