Taiwan Today (Wednesday, July 15, 2015) - President Ma Ying-jeou said July 13 that relations between the ROC and Dominican Republic are going from strength to strength, and vowed to take them to new heights during his final year in office.

“Cooperative ties have continued expanding in recent years, with many initiatives supported by the ROC already benefitting the people of the Dominican Republic,” Ma said.

The president made the remarks while addressing the Dominican Congress during the second day of his visit to the Caribbean diplomatic ally. He discussed the current state of two-way exchanges and the ROC government’s policymaking on trade and foreign affairs, as well as cross-strait relations.

According to Ma, prime examples underscoring healthy bilateral ties include assisting in the establishment of emergency and child special services centers in the capital Santo Domingo.

In addition, charity events organized by Taiwan’s nongovernmental organizations in the Dominican Republic also help promote health, provide education for children and narrow the digital divide.

In terms of trade, Ma said 75 Taiwan businesses have invested in the Dominican Republic, creating job opportunities while spurring economic development.

The president attributed these positive developments to the government’s viable diplomacy approach and efforts in improving cross-strait relations, both of which have earned wide support from the global community and contributed to promoting regional stability.

Earlier the same day, Ma visited a center for special-needs children set up with the patronage of Dominican first lady Candida Montilla de Medina, before being awarded an honorary medal by President Danilo Medina.

This is the first leg of Ma’s visit to Latin America. The president will depart for Haiti July 14 and leave Nicaragua two days later. He is scheduled to return to Taiwan July 18 after a stopover in Los Angeles. (SFC-JSM)
