U-23 St. Kitts National Netball Stars: Orngel Erskine BIO

By: St. Kitts Netball Association, Press Release
An initiative by The Department of Community Development in collaboration with the St. Kitts Netball Association

July 16th, 2015  --  St. Kitts and Nevis is set to host this year’s ECCB/OECS U-23 Netball Tournament Saturday 18th - Wednesday 22 July, 2015 at The Pamella Tyson Netball Stadium, Basseterre St. Kitts.

    Name: Orngel Erskine

    Age:     20

    Which community do you represent?
“I’m proudly hailing from Market Street, Basseterre.”

How long have you been playing netball?
“I’ve been playing netball for about twelve (12) years.”

How long have you been playing netball for the St. Kitts National Team?
“I played for the Nevis National Team at age 16.  During the years 2011 and 2012 I traveled abroad to study and returned to National netball in 2013.”

How did you become interested in the sport?
“My aunt, Shani Dyer, who is a past National Netballer and my mother have a love for netball.   It was because of this passion that they possess for the sport, which drove me into netball.”

Has your involvement in netball impacted your life positively in any way? How?
“My involvement in netball has boosted my self confidence; it has also taught me discipline as I know I must be respectful to my coach and umpires if I want to get my maximum game play.  Playing netball at National level has allowed me the opportunity to meet new people and it has also improved my communication skills.”

What do you recommend can be done to improve netball here in St. Kitts?
“The Netball Association needs to meet with players and netball enthusiasts to discuss the future of netball.  The Association needs to be balanced with experienced and young persons and they must keep up-to-date with what is happening in netball internationally.”

If you are a member of the St. Kitts Netball Association and can implement one project, what would it be?
“There needs to be netball camps or training sessions year round so girls are prepared to fill slots on all National Teams.  This way, the association wouldn’t have to be searching for players to try-out for the team.  The players would already be there and well trained.”

How do you see community involvement impacting the performance of our U-23 National Team?
“Our performance, I think will be greatly affected by our home support and I am hoping it has a positive effect.  We need to perform before thousands of nationals and visitors.  The support is needed!”

What message would you like to relay the sponsors the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and the general public?
“Sponsorship is very vital to the successes of any tournament and we are indeed grateful to E.C.C.B. for their contribution which has made this tournament possible.  I would love to ask them also to continue supporting us as we work together to rebuild netball.  I’m inviting my Market Street fans and my family to come out and support the games as well as the entire Federation! To your Department of Community Development, thank you very much for affording us the opportunity to share our stories with the world.  Come on out all, you can’t afford to miss it!”
