Restaurant Week Vibes: Fisherman’s Wharf

By: Adam Anderson, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A beautiful sunset waded over the water as I was heading to the Monument. I had a reservation at the Fisherman's Wharf. I had heard great things about this renovated wharf that floats by the shore. I arrived at the destination and noticed a staircase that leads down by the Bay. I was eager as ever as I walked down each step.

I arrived and was greeted by a waitress who seemed to love her job. I understood why… The place is beautiful! Wooden tables, straw chairs and orange drapes lined the wooden-floor gallery. It felt like a formal casual type of place that you could go to any time and day of the week. I noticed the guests enjoying their food and drinks as the water crashed to the shore and, just meters away, chefs were cooking in an open kitchen. The smell poured out onto the floor with each meal prepared. This place was a sight for sore eyes, especially after the long day that ensued.

As I made my way to the very far back of the restaurant, I found the perfect seat right at the end where the wooden rails hit the edge of the dock. The wind was nice and soothing and floating on the water's edge was a ship wading back and forth. The ambience was unlike anything on the island.

I noticed the chefs working on my first course. They carefully placed the Conch Pâte in a ball and placed them in a pan of oil. The smell hit the air of fresh Shellfish and herbs. I couldn't help but appreciate every aspect of the environment that helped to create such an elevated dining experience. I became aware that the waitress was coming with the Conch Fritters, so I prepared myself for what was in store.

The waitress came with a beautiful plate of golden brown Fritters. I couldn't help but notice the smell of garlic, onion and peppers as the plate was laid in front of me. I took my first bite and it's absolutely juicy. So moist and full of Conch...the only breading the delicious blended Conch. It was all meat and seasoning. I would say it was the best Conch I had on the island and, before I realise it, all the Conch Fritters were gone…I devoured the plate in a delicious whirlwind.

The waitress arrived shortly after with a delicious looking piece of crisp white flesh. It was a pan-seared Grouper in a marinated Cajun Olive Oil with onions and peppers. Right next to it was a delicious seasoned rice and veggie that only helped to soak up the flavour as I ate the dish. I took my first bite and it was savory and spicy. The spice was a middle note to the after note of lime that I spritzed over the glorious piece of meat. I then decided to lay the fish on a bed of rice as I took another bite. The combination of flavours was quite refreshing. The fish was so delicate and the rice cooked to perfection allowed for the seasonings to blossom. I finished the veggies last after the juices drenched the bottom of the plate. The carrots were so sweet they almost served my dessert...but I knew better.

The finale was on its way!

The bartender brought me an aesthetically pleasing cup of ocean blue Daiquiri. It was the only mint Piña Colada I have ever tried and it was so delicious. I placed it down in preparation for the dessert, which was on its way.

It was a local rum fruitcake that had the colour of cherry wood. Dark burgundy, the colours itself mesmerizing as to remind me of my favourite sweet…chocolate. And surprisingly enough, it tasted like a sweet and tangy fudge. Bitter like chocolate, sweet like fruit and the tang of citrus. I don’t normally eat rum fruitcake but it became easily my favourite dessert...period. As I took each bite, it alternated with a sip of mint Piña Colada that created a cascade of what reminded me of a fruity mint chocolate. If I am to suggest any drink to have with the rum cake, I couldn't have had a better drink to pair. It’s the peanut butter to jelly, the milk to cookies…it was the mint Colada to the rum fruitcake. I was in pure heaven. I sat there and enjoyed the view as sunset became night.

I was mesmerised by the fish as I sat there just to relax. I was in no rush. The elevated dining experience brought me to another world and I didn’t want to leave. We took a video so that if you don't take my word for it, you can see for yourself.

If you're looking for a place with a view nowhere else on the island of St. Kitts, go to the Fisherman's Wharf. I’ll see you there!
