BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER being on the run for some 10 weeks, police were successful in apprehending a male Cayon resident who was wanted for a number of criminal offences.

The captured fugitive, Marcus ‘Mighty’ Hunkins of Hermitage Village, Lower Cayon, was wanted for larceny and was also considered a person of interest in a series of break-ins.

On Sunday (May 24), police had issued a wanted bulletin for the 39-year-old man, but since then he had always been steps ahead of the lawmen.

However, according to a police communiqué, at about 7:55 p.m. on Saturday (Aug. 1), Hunkins was seen by plain clothes police officers walking along the Bay Road in the vicinity of Lower College Street and they arrested him.

He was taken to the Basseterre Police Station, where “the warrant was executed on him and he is currently at Her Majesty’s Prison serving a four-month sentence”.

The communiqué stated that the Station Officer at the Cayon Police Station, Sergeant Carl Greaux, took the opportunity to thank all those who cooperated and assisted with the police in providing information about sightings of Hunkins.

“The High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force will also like, through this medium, to publicly commend the police officers who were instrumental in the capture of Marcus Hunkins. Certainly the capture and subsequent delivery to Her Majesty's Prison will bring some form of relief to the residents of Cayon and the surrounding villages, and also the country as a whole,” the communiqué said.

Shortly after the wanted bulletin was posted for Hunkins, this publication had spoken to a number of residents in Cayon and was told that on May 21officers at the Cayon Police Station had launched an early morning operation in which a number of residences were searched.

One resident said: “It was observed early Thursday morning that a host of armed officers from Cayon Police Station went searching some homes in the community. We learned that when they went to search Mighty’s home, he jumped through a window and escaped. So far, we do not know what they found there, but he did not wait around for them to arrest him.
