ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – ANTIGUA’S ‘sound girl’ Damara L.G. Phillips, a.k.a. DD, will be having her post Hoody Affair Selecta DD’s Earthday Party on Easter Sunday (Apr. 12) at The Coast in Antigua.

The party was originally scheduled for a cruise but because the boat is currently undergoing repairs, Phillips decided to host the event on land.

The party will feature Cannabis, Exile 1, King Warrior, Rupture, Lava International, Zuguluss Movements, Ibis the LIVEST, Wardadli SoulJahs, Supa Dymond Ent,  Sistah SoulJahs sounds along with Artist/Musician ‘Promise’.

Phillips said that she thought long and hard about coming up with a theme for her birthday bash, as she wanted to produce something different from the norm.

“For some months now my brother sound, WarDadli SoulJahs, have been advertising their clothing line and I absolutely fell in love with their hoodies.

“So then it hit me…why the heck not have a Hoody Party. It’s only the hottest thing going on right now in fashion and I will be endorsing Wardadli Souljahs' new clothing line at the same time,” she said.

Phillips said she is planning to have a Hoody Affair in Anguilla and also plans to take the idea to another neighboring island.

She is a professional DJ and Graphic Artist and started her sound, Sistah Souljahs, because of her love for music.

“I always loved music from since I was a child growing up; I always had a passion for it. I never really thought about being a DJ though, until I started to mess around with tracks and a DJ programme on my computer, playing for family and close friends at first and also producing mixes.

“It was then I realised how fun it was, and my family and close friends also encouraged me to step out of my bedroom with it. I was in my early years of high school, so school was my main focus then,” she said.

The 22-year-old said that after she finished high school she became more serious about it and began honing her talents under the guidance of Gamal ‘G’ Goodwin and his brother Shaka ‘Dangerous’ Goodwin, who had successfully created their Wardadli Souljahs sound.

“It was when they returned home after completing their studies I started to mix CDs. Yep, you heard me, ya girl can mix cd's too. So don't let that big ugly laptop fool you, it’s more of a convenience to me,” she said, adding, “nothing beats a good pair of CD tables.”

Phillips recruited three other females and formed ‘Sistah Souljahs in April 2006.

She has played at all the popular clubs in Antigua including Rush, 18k, The Coast, Coral Ark and Abracadabra and has played in a number of other countries including Tortola and Anguilla.

She describes herself as “laid back and conscious” with a deep soul, but on the other hand enjoys laughing and being around her family and loved ones.

“I enjoy the simple things in life. I always say it doesn't take much to make me happy but it takes much to get me upset. I may seem very quiet in person; I wouldn't have much to say unless I warm up to you. I like to observe and listen then talk.”

The DJ said she would like to thank everyone for their involvement with the event and also her friend Safia ‘Safi’ Edwards who has always encouraged and supported her over the years, both personally and professionally.
