Youth Leaders Mobilize to Address Community Concerns

By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 12, 2015 (SKNIS): Youth leaders across St. Kitts are expected to mobilize to identify and address issues in their respective communities at the conclusion of a three week-long Youth Service Training programme.

The Department of Youth Empowerment is organizing the training for 30 young persons that will begin next Tuesday (August 18) with sessions being held every Tuesday and Thursday up to Thursday, September 03. The total of six sessions will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will be held at the NEMA Conference Room.

Senior Youth Officer Pierre Liburd explained that the programme is designed to essentially build the capacity of youth and youth organizations and engage them in playing a greater role in developing their community and country as a whole with a focus on at-risk youth.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to gain new skills or sharpen existing ones; serve your community; engage peers in a more productive and sustainable endeavour and make St. Kitts and Nevis a prosperous nation that continues to lead and earn international recognition,” Mr. Liburd said.

As such sessions will focus on the importance and role of organizations, leadership, conflict resolution, needs assessment, situational analysis, project development, financing and record keeping, monitoring and evaluation and more. A diverse group of experts in the respective fields have been recruited to facilitate the sessions, using interactive tools and other appealing techniques.

Liburd pointed out that persons not currently attached to youth groups are more than welcome to register for the training as it will help with their personal development and prepare them for future engagements that require teamwork and group dynamics.

Interested individuals can register at the Department of Youth Empowerment on Church Street. Additional information is available via telephone 465-2528, 467-1393, 664-9480 or by emailing pierreliburd@gmail.com.

The Youth Service Training is sponsored by the European Union.
