CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A man, who said it was a mistake that he wounded another, was on Wednesday (Apr. 15) fined $2 500 after he was found guilty in the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court.

Pratap Sukh of Jessups Village pleaded not guilty to wounding Allen Mohamed when the case was brought before Magistrate Yasmin Clarke on Tuesday (Apr. 15). The incident took place on January 1, 2009 at a shop on Craddock Road.

According to Mohamed, he had fixed a vehicle for the defendant but something apparently went wrong with the vehicle within a month of it being repaired. He said that on the day in question the defendant approached him on Craddock Road and started arguing about the job. Mohamed said he ignored him and turned away, but when he turned back Sukh hit him in the face with a glass and he fell to the ground. Mohamed said he was taken to the hospital where he spent three days undergoing treatment.

Sukh, in his defence, told the court that it was a mistake and after the incident occurred he reported the matter at the police station. He also said that he apologised, visited the victim at the hospital daily and made sure he was okay.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Mitchell told the court tthat the matter was a simple one and the evidence was clear. He said the act was committed intentionally and the defendant only visited the victim because he knew what could have happened that night.

Magistrate Clarke found Sukh guilty and gave him six months to pay the fine or spend six months in jail.
