BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ONE of the three men arrested on Tuesday (Aug. 25) following the marijuana, firearm and ammunition bust was slapped with five charges and remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison.

A police communiqué issued this afternoon (Aug. 28) stated that Akile Keithroy Glasgow of Sandy Point was detained in Basseterre after collecting a suspicious package and that further investigations confirmed it contained a quantity of compressed marijuana and an illegal firearm with matching ammunition.

It also stated that Glasgow was formally arrested on Wednesday (Aug. 26) and charged with Possession of Cannabis, Possession of Cannabis with Intent to Supply, Importation of Cannabis, Illegal Possession of a Firearm and Illegal Possession of Ammunition, and was remanded until his trial.

Glasgow was apprehended following a joint intelligence-led operation carried out about 12:30 p.m. on the day in question by members of the SSU, Drug Squad, SIU and Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise Department.

Information reaching this media house stated that Glasgow had uplifted a package from KDP Enterprises, a cargo-clearing agency on Central Street, Basseterre, and was shortly after apprehended on New Street.

A search of the package at the Basseterre Police Station revealed the find of the illegal items.

Police claimed that the compressed marijuana weighed 2 803 grams (2.803 kilos or 6.1 pounds) and is estimated at a wholesale value of EC$56 060 and a street value of EC$168 180. They also stated that along with the firearm was a magazine containing 19 rounds of ammunition.

Two employees of LIME were also taken into custody on that day just outside of KDP Enterprises, where one of them went to collect a package.

The duo, who sources claimed were mistakenly arrested, were handcuffed, put to sit at the back of one of their employer’s pickup and driven to the Basseterre Police Station in full view of a large crowd.

A previous communiqué had stated that while at the station, the duo was “interviewed by the officers and their items searched. Nothing to satisfy the suspicion was discovered in their packages and they were discharged pending further enquiries”.

Following the success of the operation, the Comptroller of Customs and the Acting Commissioner of Police have both expressed their appreciation for the dedication and vigilance of the officers in both law enforcement agencies.

Commenting on the incident, Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Ian Queeley said, “This interception brings to 13 the number of illegal firearms confiscated to date this year and has surpassed the total for last year.”

The communiqué noted that he also reiterated that the fight against crime takes all of us, and urges the public to say something if they see something.

“Contact your nearest police station, or use the anonymous tip line, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477(TIPS) to report any criminal activity,” he stressed.
