By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A middle-aged man who spent hours in a septic hole, having fallen into it last evening (Sept. 1), was rescued therefrom this morning by the Search and Rescue Unit of the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services Department.

SKNVibes observed that a fire appliance was rushing westward along Cayon Street shortly after 8:00 a.m. and later discovered that it was to rescue the man from the pit.

The man, Cecil Maynard of Buckley’s Housing Project, was reportedly discovered by construction workers this morning after they arrived on site to begin their duties. The hole was reported dug for the construction of a septic tank.

Fire Chief Everette O’Garro told SKNVibes that the Department received a report about 8:15 a.m. and when they arrived at Buckley’s Housing Project, they found that Maynard was in the hole and appeared to have suffered some sort of injury.

The Rescue Team descended into the hole with their specialized equipment and worked to stabilize the 59-year-old, who complained of lack of feeling in a number of his extremities.

Securely strapped to a backboard stretcher, the man was hoisted out of the pit and O’Garro indicated that he was removed from the scene by a unit of the Emergency Medical Services and was transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital.

The Fire Chief explained that from what he had gathered, Maynard was walking in the area sometime last evening when he fell into the hole. He also indicated that relatives, recognizing that they had not seen or heard from him for some time, called his cellular phone but did not receive any answer.

He continued that Maynard reported hearing his phone ring but was unable to answer it because of the injuries he sustained.
