BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HIS EXCELLENCY Samuel WeymothTapley Seaton QC, who has been acting as the Federation’s Governor-General for the past three months, was recently confirmed to that position.
In May 2015, the Team Unity Government informed the public that it had sought leave of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to withdraw the appointment of then Governor-General His Excellency Sir Edmund Lawrence and appoint Seaton to act in that office.
Permission was granted and since then Seaton carried the title of Acting Governor-General until, as explained by Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, support was sought of Her Majesty in having him appointed Governor-General of the Federation.
Dr. Harris said the request was acceded to and Seaton was confirmed Governor-General effective September 1, 2015.
This morning (Sept. 2) at Government House, His Excellency Seaton was sworn in by resident High Court Judge Her Honour Justice Marlene Carter.
The Governor-General took both the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Office in the presence of Prime Minister Harris, Attorney-General the Hon. Vincent Byron Jr., Senator the Hon. Wendy Phipps and Cabinet Secretary Josephine Huggins, among others.
PM Harris told the media that his government is grateful for Her Majesty’s accession to Seaton’s appointment.
“So, henceforth, there is no longer an acting appointment. We have brought closure to that. We are grateful that Her Majesty has seen it fit to accept the nomination and it is indeed a great pleasure that the office of the Governor-General is now being substantively held by one of most respected son of the soil.”
