BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SEVERAL computers were among items destroyed by a fire which occurred this afternoon (Sept. 8) at the Advanced Vocational Education Centre (AVEC).

SKNVibes understands that individuals were occupying the Technical Drawing and Arts Room there when what appeared to be a malfunction of the air conditioning unit which is mounted in that room was observed.

This quickly led to a fire, the occupants reportedly evacuated the room and the Basseterre Fire Department was contacted to provide assistance.

Information coming from the Fire Chief Everette O’Garro indicated that the Fire Department responded to the report at about 2:50 p.m. and when they arrived at the scene, the officers observed smoke emanating from the room, and having entered, found sections of it ablaze.

The fire was successfully extinguished but not before, according to O’Garro, seven HP computer systems, one Dell laptop, a printer and a number of desks were destroyed.

He said the Department suspects that the fire started as the result of an electrical fault with an air conditioning unit which is mounted in the same room.

The responding officers of the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services have been commended by the Fire Chief for their “efficiency and quick response which prevented the fire from spreading and had it spread, it would have resulted in further damage and loss”.
