BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EDUCATOR, social commentator and historian George Washington Archibald is one of nine individuals who have been selected to receive national honours this year.

The announcement was made this morning (National Heroes’ Day, Sept. 16) by Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy S. Harris during the traditional Wreath-Laying Ceremony held in St. Paul’s.

He said the selection of awardees was approved by His Excellency S. W. Tapley Seaton, upon the advice of the Prime Minister and recommendation of the National Awards Committee.

The Star of Merit Award would be presented to George Washington Archibald for his contribution to Education, Richard Caines for his contribution to Business and Marjorie Morton for her outstanding contribution in the Public Sector.

The Medal of Honour Award is being bestowed on Sylvia Garnett for longstanding contribution to Nursing and Healthcare, Ivan Hanley for his contribution to Law Enforcement, Theodore Hobson QC for his contribution to Law, Winston Skeete for his contribution to Nautical Matters, Maurice Widdowson for his contribution to Heritage and Conservation and James ‘Barman’ Hanley for his contribution to Sports.

Speaking of the awardees, PM Harris expressed, “Greatness is at times designated on a few yet everyday unsung heroes arise. Today, we give recognition and honour to some of our citizens and residents who have served our county faithfully and well.”

Dr. Harris said the awardees’ achievements should spur others of the St. Kitts-Nevis community to do their part in continuing to build the nation.

“I congratulate all of these our fellow citizens and residents whose respective outstanding contributions are being recognised and hereby acknowledged. Let their spirit of enterprise, let their spirit of achievement and commitment inspire us to do likewise and in our several capacities as fellowcitizens and residents, we must do our part in nation building.”
