BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TWO years after a fourth individual was added to the list of the Federation’s National Heroes, a fifth individual is being added, the name of whom would be announced on Independence Day (Sept. 19).

While delivering his speech at the traditional wreath-laying ceremony held in St. Pauls today (National Heroes’ Day, Sept. 16), Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris made the announcement but was careful not to divulge the name of the individual nor did he provide any hints.

“On Independence Day September 19, 2015, I will inform the nation of the name of our newest national hero whose name will be added to the pantheon of National Heroes.”

He did indicate however that the lasting legacy of an individual is one of the criteria by which National Heroes are selected.

“National Heroes are recognized as persons who made a significant and lasting contribution to our nation’s development. The National Hero must have enriched the lives of others and their legacy must stand the test of time.”

Since the Prime Minister made the announcement, members of the pubic have been suggesting names of individuals who they believe should be bestowed the National Hero Award honour.

Some of the names being suggested are: Elquemedo Willett for being the first Nevisian to be drafted into the West Indies Cricket Team, Kim Collins for his athletic prowess in bringing fame to the Federation and Dr. the Rt. Hon. Sir Kennedy Simmonds who ushered the Federation into independence and set it on a course of modernization and prosperity.

While some may speculate, all would have to wait until the official announcement is made on Saturday to find out to whom the prestigious award is being bestowed.

The selected individual will join the likes of the Federation’s first National Hero and first Premier, the Rt. Excellent Sir Robert L. Bradshaw; the Rt. Excellent Sir C. A. Paul Southwell; the Rt. Excellent Joseph N. France and Dr. the Rt. Excellent Simeon Daniel.
