Calypso Reggie laid to rest

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE cultural icon known for his comedic and entertaining mannerisms while chairing calypso shows and also known as the country’s main town crier, Reginald ‘Calypso Reggie’ Thomas, was laid to rest yesterday afternoon (Sept. 25).

The funeral service for the 53-year-old was held at the Patsy Allers Playfield where many individuals had gathered to witness and participate in the ceremony.

A public figure in his own right, Thomas impacted the lives of countless individuals and his signature “hello there” and “a like that” expressions were often what alerted many of his presence in a particular area.

Several paid tribute to the fallen calypsonian at the funeral including legendary artiste and drummer Michael ‘Mic’ Stokes, Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Number Two the Hon. Konris Maynard, veteran calypsonian Lord Kut, Wingrove Hicks and the Grandmasters Band and Deputy Prime Minister the Hon. Shawn K. Richards.

At the back of the pamphlet, which was distributed to attendees of the funeral, were several tributes through which relatives and close friends expressed their fondest memories of the calypsonian.

His son Reginald Akeem Gumbs penned, “I adored you dad. As a boy I developed a strong desire to be wherever he was. My mom reminded me of the days when I was a toddler I would always run away from home to be with him on the road. My dad was encouraged to build a home for us and he saw that we were well taken care of as we grew. He was always a motivator and a guide for positive things.

“My father was always a hero and life saver to any and everyone. He always reminded me of one of life’s greatest mantras, ‘Where the sun rise is not where it sets’. Now he is gone I will embrace the lessons I’ve learnt and live a life my dad, my icon and teacher would be proud of.”

Shonovia A. Thomas poetically remembers her father with these words:
    “Jokes and laughs
    Conversations of the past
    Memories to last
    World’s greatest dad!

You were a father to any child around you
A man with a heart that was true
Every chance I got I told you I love you
Now you are gone to a life anew”

Identified as Thomas’s adopted daughter, Patricia Gumbs remembers him as one who always showed her love.

“You may not be my biological father, but you never showed me any less love. You loved me from the moment you saw me and I did the same. You may be gone but memories will last forever. I love you and miss you daddy. May your soul rest in peace.”

Thomas’ Formal Remembrance or Eulogy was read by Clement ‘Monarch’ O’Garro and the service was officiated by Elder Conrad Kelley of the Olivet Gospel Hall, Pastor Lincoln Connor of the Antioch Baptist Church, and Pastor Judah Payne of Millionaire Harvest Church.

Thomas was interred at the Springfield Cemetery.
