BVI Press Release

B.V.I. Tuesday, April 21 – The Road Town branch of the Public Library will soon expand to two floors according to Hon. Andrew Fahie, Minister for Education and Culture as he addressed the Territory Sunday to open Library Week 2009.

Hon. Fahie said the Ministry of Education and Culture recently secured the top floor of the Malone Building where the library is located on Flemming Street to facilitate the expansion.

“In a short while, members of the public will enjoy two floors of books, resource materials and information displays that will assist the excellent services already delivered to the public by the Chief Librarian, Ms. Susan Greenaway and her staff,” he said.

The minister also noted that there will “be the installation of an elevator to ensure access for those with physical disabilities among others”.

Speaking of the expansion and improvements, Hon. Fahie said they are “in keeping with Government’s commitment to improve facilities and services that we render to the public to better serve the people of the Territory”.

He continued, “as with education, I intend to do all that I can to take the library services from “good to great” and this week will begin the transformation to a modern and thorough library service as we showcase our strengths during Library Week”.

Hon. Fahie further encouraged the public to “take full advantage of the services that the library offers now and the services that the library will offer in the future.

“Visit the libraries on Anegada, Virgin Gorda and Tortola whenever you can and use the resources and books to open your mind and open the doors to your life,” he said.

Library Week is being observed in the Territory from April 18 to April 25 under the theme, ‘An open book, opens minds and opens doors’. In addition to the main library in Road Town, the Territory has other libraries on Tortola, Anegada and Virgin Gorda. Library Week ends on Friday with a Culture Day at 10:00 a.m. at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.
