BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 4TH 2005 Over four and a half inches of rain fell on St. Kitts between 5:30 PM Monday and 1:30 A.M. Tuesday.
Heavy equipment operators were out in force Tuesday morning removing mud and debris deposited on the island's main roads as a result of heavy rain.
Senior Meteorological Officer at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, Mr. Maurice Mills told the Communications Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister that some 4.6 inches of rain was recorded at the Airport between that period.
Mills said that rainfall in other parts of St. Kitts would be higher than 4.6 inches during that period as the skies were dark and rain was falling in those areas before and after the recorded period at the Airport. The rainfall was accompanied by heavy lightening and thunder.
There was no immediate word on damage to agriculture or the infrastructure.
Mr. Mills said that the inclement weather was caused by an elongated mid to upper level trough that passed through the Leeward Islands yesterday.
Mr. Mills said that rainfall recorded for the month of October was 5.8 inches.
Tuesday several work crews were seen clearing roads which were littered by dirt and other debris.
St. Kitts last year recorded 19.39 inches of rain in October 2004, which was more than three times the October annual average of 6.03 inches while rainfall for November 2004 was 16.38 inches compared with the November annual average of 6.85 inches.
