October 21st, 2015 -- In December 2013, WTO (World Trade Organisation) Members concluded the negotiations of the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) at the 9th Ministerial Conference in Bali. Upon entry into force, the TFA will create binding obligations for WTO Members to improve customs procedures, transparency, efficiency, and cooperation amongst border regulatory agencies and the private sector.
To ensure St. Kitts and Nevis reaps the full benefits from the TFA, the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs will be hosting a national workshop on the Trade Facilitation Agreement in collaboration with the ITC (International Trade Center) the UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development), and the OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States) Commission on the 22nd and 23rd October, 2015, at the Ocean Terrace Inn.
The primary objective of the workshop is to assist the key players of the public and private sectors to:
• Improve their appreciation and understanding of the TFA
• Identify and asses the steps required for implementing the TFA in the Federation
It is expected that this national workshop will provide an opportunity for private and public stakeholder officials to understand the obligations that developing countries like St. Kitts and Nevis have accepted, which should result in the development of partnerships that will arrive at mutually beneficial outcomes for both governments and traders.
Participants are expected from the St. Kitts and Nevis Chambers of Industry and Commerce, and other private sector companies including Freight and Shipping companies, Courier services providers, St. Christopher Air and Sea Port Authority (SCASPA), and Nevis Air and Sea Port Authority (NASPA) St. Kitts Investment Promotion Agency (SKIPA), Nevis Investment Promotion Agency (NIPA), Customs and Excise Department, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture, St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards, Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB).
