Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Youth, Honourable Shawn K. Richards
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 29, 2015 (SKNIS): A cook off competition among schools, a safety and security conference, youth parliament sitting and the implementation of a number of volunteer projects will mark St. Kitts and Nevis’ month-long observance of Youth Month.

Senior Youth Officer Chereca Weaver said the theme for the November commemoration is “Give Youth a Choice and Inspire Greatness.” That message is reflected in the type of positive activities that are planned for the month.

Youth Month opens on Sunday (November 01) with a message from the nation’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Youth, Honourable Shawn Richards, who is expected to share some of the plans Government has designed for youth empowerment. That same morning, department officials, volunteers and other partners will attend a service at the Unique Touch Church in Sandy Point.

Then a call to action will be made on Monday (November 02) for volunteer projects and activities to be implemented. On Thursday (November 05), a Teen Cyber Bullying Workshop is scheduled and the following day (Friday) a display of the projects completed by the 25 Most Remarkable Teens of 2014 will take place at the Cayon High School.

Additionally, citizens can look forward to the return of two popular events during Youth Month. The new class of The 25 Most Remarkable Teens in St. Kitts and Nevis will be honoured during a special sitting of the National Assembly on Thursday, November 12.  Young people will return to the Assembly chambers on Wednesday, November 25, for a Youth Parliament sitting.

Partnerships were also formed with various groups and individuals holding complementary activities. There will also be an opera concert on November 01 at the St. George’s Anglican Church, the Making a Difference Everywhere Rally on November 14 and Global Entrepreneurship Week activities from November 16 to 21.

“I do believe that the future of St. Kitts and Nevis is in good hands with our young people,” Deputy Prime Minister Richards said during an interview on the Government’s weekly call-in radio programme “Working for You”. He reiterated his Government’s people-centred approach and assured the youth population that its positive development remains high on the agenda. The Deputy Prime Minister said engagements and dialogue will continue to ensure that the Department of Youth designs programmes and projects that will speak even more to the dreams and aspirations of the youth.
