Minister Richards bats for education reform

Honourable Shawn K. Richards
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 02, 2015 (SKNIS)—Despite the successes of some schools and students in St. Kitts and Nevis, Minister of Education, and Deputy Prime Minister Honourable Shawn Richards acknowledged that much more work has to be done to ensure the education system meets the demand of a changing world.

“Let us also recognize that education is not stagnant. We have to look at what is happening right here in St. Kitts and Nevis, within the region and around the world and ensure that our education system is meeting the needs of a changing economy—of a changing world. We have to ensure that we educate our children so that they can compete not just locally, but regionally and internationally but first and foremost so that they can continue to move this country forward,” Richards said during an interview on the Government’s weekly radio programme “Working for You.”

Coincidentally, at the time of the radio interview, the education minister said that representatives from the Ministry of Education and other governmental stakeholders were attending a meeting at the Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI) dealing with matters of educational reform.

Meanwhile, Minister Richards noted that the Government of National Unity intends to keep the promises made to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. After nine months in office, he said he continues to enjoy working with his colleagues in office and believes that the hard work by the Government has brought many successes with just eight months in office.

“We have committed ourselves to putting people first and everything that we have done thus far is centered on putting people first. We wake up every day with one single goal in mind and that is developing the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” Minister Richards said.

“Indeed, I must say that I am honored to be appointed as the deputy prime minister and the minister with responsibility for education, youth, sports and culture. Those ministries will enable me to ensure that our future continues to look bright,” he added.
