BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LONGSTANDING journalist and musician Dawud ‘Mudada’ Byron departed this life earlier today (Nov. 3), leaving a trail of grief and sadness with those whose lives were touched by his existence.

SKNVibes understands that Byron endured a prolonged illness before losing the battle for his life.

For many years, he was the Managing Editor of the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Spokesman newspaper.

At his monthly press conference this morning, Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris offered condolences to Byron’s family and friends.

“I am advised that a member of the media in Mr. Dawud Byron has passed today. I want to from this particular setting extend condolences to his family, his friends and well-wishers and to say to them that the country mourns and remains in prayer that the good God of mercy will visit them at this point of discomfort and mourning.”

PM Harris recalled that less than three months ago he was involved in a ceremony that recognised individuals for their contribution to nation building, one of whom was Byron.

“I had the honour earlier this year at a function at the Government House to be part of a ceremony in which he was recognised nationally for his contribution to journalism and to community activity. I congratulated him then and his family, and so at this point of bereavement I want them to know that the Prime Minister and his Cabinet and the county at large do mourn with them and wish them well.”

Dr. Harris paused the Press Conference and asked that a moment of silence be observed in Byron’s honour.

At the Investiture Ceremony held in late August, Byron was among eight individuals who received the Medal of Honour for his service in Journalism and Music.

He served as a reporter, Editor and Assistant Manager for in excess of 36 years and was elevated to the position of Managing Editor of Labour Spokesman. He also functioned as an Associated Press correspondent.

A profile published by SKNIS informs that Byron’s musical exploits included being an original member of Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass International Band and a founding member of the Grand Masters Band.

“A professional musician, Mr. Byron was instrumental during the ‘Golden Days’ of St. Kitts and Nevis music when the bands served as ‘Ambassadors’ for the islands. Mr. Byron was a member of the original Ellie Matt and the G.I. Brass International, a member of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force Band and a founding member of the Grand Masters Band. Active in the Community, he was instrumental in the establishment of the National Youth Council; was a member of the African Liberation Movement and other organisations.”

Management and Staff of SKNVibes take the opportunity to extend heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the late Dawud St. Lloyd ‘Mudada’ Byron.
