      Wakely Daniel
Charlestown Nevis (October 5, 2005) President of the Nevis Teachers Union (NTU) Mr. Wakely Daniel has articulated that the voice of teachers should be heard when decisions in the educational system are being made.

He made the announcement on Tuesday during a televised message to commemorate World Teachers Day which is celebrated annually on October 5th

We urge that the voice of teachers be heard in shaping decisions in education, which they themselves have to carry out, said Daniel. In today's global world governments should understand that respect for the right to quality education and investing in people is the key to building a successful education system.

He noted that the theme for the day would focus on Training for a Teaching Force and that resorting to short cuts would be self-defeating. Investment in training is critical to developing a stronger teaching force, and to the genuine provision of quality education to all.

There is a need for teachers to receive proper training to meet all children's needs as well as continuous in-service training to upgrade their skills.  This calls for high quality initial training, providing future teachers with both academic knowledge and experience in teaching methods.

Along with our fellow unions worldwide, the Nevis Teachers Union is of the firm conviction that it is not enough to place an untrained person, willing as he or she might be, in front of a group of children and call that person a teacher.  There are no shortcuts to the provision of quality education, intimated Daniel.

The president pointed out that World Teachers Day provides an opportunity for all to celebrate teachers and added, The best celebration is a practical one where we demonstrate each and every day our appreciation and understanding of the noble and complex work done by our teachers.

President Daniel is who also the principal of the former Prospect Primary School, now the Ivor Walters Primary School, wished all a happy world teachers Day on behalf of the Nevis Teachers Union.  May your special day prove to be fulfilling, inspiring and rewarding.  More than any other you truly deserve a day of your own.  May God continue to bless you all, ended Daniel.
