Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 13, 2015 (SKNIS): The Honourable Shawn Richards, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Youth Empowerment, said that everyone can do his/her part to help youth to overcome their challenges, as he reflected on the inspiring stories of the 2015 class of the 25 Most Remarkable Teens in St. Kitts and Nevis who were awarded during a special sitting of Parliament on Thursday, November 12, at the Parliamentary Chambers, Government Headquarters.
Deputy Prime Minister Richards, while commenting on profiles, stated that some of the young persons awarded have had challenges in their lives, however, the important thing is their ability to overcome them.
One such story was that of Anson-Belle Carty, a 19 year old graduate of the Charles E Mills Secondary School, who received the Remarkable Teen Award in the category of Courage to Overcome.
Minister Richards recalled his recent attendance at the Charles E. Mills Secondary School’s Speech Day, where Mr. Daryl Lloyd, Deputy Chief Education Officer, gave the featured address, hinting at similar themes of adults positively molding young people. Lloyd’s message resonated well, as it was not in words alone but in deed also, as he played an integral role in mentoring Mr. Belle-Carty from a very tender age. Belle-Carty credits Lloyd and his truancy officer for turning his life around.
The Deputy Prime Minister commented on Anson Bell-Carty’s achievement and expressed his admiration in him making a difference in the lives of others.
“I am happy to note that Mr. Belle-Carty is now a member of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, but also finds time Mr. Speaker to volunteer at the annual Youth Camp, held by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, therefore making a difference in the lives of young people, just as persons would have made a difference in his life,” he said.
Other categories of awards included Writing, Visual Arts- Cosmetology Volunteerism, Scholar Athlete, The Arts- Music, Civic Involvement, Spiritual Commitment, Youth Activism, Music-Voice, Athletics, Dance, Sports, Young Entrepreneur and Leadership.
