    B.V.I. Monday, April 27 – Government will join the rest of the world in celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work under the theme, Health and Life at Work: A Basic Human Right on Tuesday, April 28 with a ceremony in the ‘Breezeway’ of the Central Administration Complex.

     

    Safety and Health Project Coordinator of the Safety and Health Unit in the Department of Human Resources, Mrs. Sylvia George, told the Department of Information and Public Relations that this is the first year the Virgin Islands will be celebrating World Day for Safety and Health and Work.  She said “healthy and productive employees are beneficial to the organisation, family life, the community and the social and economic development of the country.”

     

    At Tuesday’s ceremony Governor David Pearey, Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Honourable Omar Hodge, Deputy Governor Mrs. V. Inez Archibald and Director of Human Resources, Mr. David Archer, are expected to deliver remarks.

     

    Representatives from various ministries and departments will also perform skits, poems, songs and other dramatic presentations on the importance of being safe at work.  A photographic display depicting examples of unsafe work practices will also be mounted in the East Atrium of the building.

     

    World Day for Safety and Health at Work is celebrated annually to focus international attention on issues related to occupational safety and health to raise awareness on how promoting and creating a safety and health culture can help to reduce, and eliminate work related injuries, illnesses, or even death.
