BVI, 19 November 2015 - The Water and Sewerage Department has been investing in its workers by providing the necessary training to develop each technician’s expertise and prepare them to become certified in their respective areas.
Beginning October 28, the technicians participated in a two-day training session facilitated by the Caribbean Water and Sewerage Association Incorporated (CAWASA), whose mandate is to provide training and resources to all Caribbean member states.
Director of Water and Sewerage Department, Mrs. Perline Scatliffe-Leonard, stated that the department is a member of the association, and it keeps them abreast of new techniques and services that can be provided to its customers, thereby enhancing its product.
She stated, “Through the two-day training and other trainings to come, the field staff is being equipped with information to eventually have them certified in their respective areas of work.”
She added that officers would also be provided with new and innovative techniques to help them handle the different issues faced as water and wastewater operators. Mrs. Leonard said that overall, the department is aiming to have an improved, efficient and sustainable water distribution network, and the workshop was one of the many ways they are working towards that goal.
The two-day workshop consisted of training pertaining to water treatment, hydraulics for potable water and waste water systems, disinfection and plant management for which thirty four (34) field operators were successful and received a certificate of completion.
CAWASA Instructor, Mr. Alphonsus Daniel said that all technicians would have to undergo more extensive training and CAWASA would help the department in facilitating these courses.
This training is timely as the newly commissioned treatment plant at Burt Point is now producing clear, treated effluent and is going through the final testing stages before being handed over to the Ministry of Communications and Works. Officers were also privileged to tour the water production facility at Paraquita Bay.
The Water and Sewerage Department is committed to providing exceptional and reliable services to its stakeholders and enhancing the water distribution network, and sewerage collection and treatment systems in the Territory.
