Stakeholders and Entrepreneurs who attended the GEW Business Breakfast
Press Release

(Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 01, 2015) --The future for youth innovators in St. Kitts and Nevis seems bright as attested to by officials of the public and private sector who celebrated the spirit of the entrepreneur during the recent observance of Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 16 – 22).

GEW Co-host Ervin Welsh of Positively Inclined highlighted that activities were mainly designed to stimulate discussion among the invited guests for a transfer of knowledge, greater networking and collaboration opportunities. It also gave the young entrepreneurs an avenue to interact with key officials, whom they did, outlining their vision and detailing their company offerings. Some also had displays of their products and services on site at events such as a breakfast meeting and business and creative arts expo.

Most of the business representatives were impressed with the participating youth who ranged in age from 35 to 16 years. The young people were congratulated on having the courage and the drive to create products and services that offer something different or in some cases an alternative to existing products and services. Officials from various financial institutions openly outlined some of the services that can be accessed by the entrepreneurs

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Christopher Herbert, outlined that “national development must be fuelled by our youth.” The Department of Youth has been engaged in several entrepreneurial programmes, particularly the Creativity for Employment and Business Opportunity (CEBO) training.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Commerce, Charlton Edwards, noted that entrepreneurs should look beyond local boundaries and take advantage of the opportunity to move goods to countries signed on to the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). He reiterated that the local government was committed to strengthening entrepreneurship and will continue to assist its development where possible.

Participating stakeholders in St Kitts and Nevis were saluted by Dr. Marcia Brandon, Chief Entrepreneurship Expert at the Caribbean Center of Excellence for Sustainable Livelihoods, host of GEW St. Kitts and Nevis and Lead of Global Entrepreneurship Network Caribbean. Her words were particularly inspiring for the young entrepreneurs as she highlighted the power of belief which can bring about achievement and success.

Jonathan Ortmans, President, Global Entrepreneurship Week, recorded a personal message for the gathering, congratulating them for being among the 10 million persons around the world participating in GEW activities. Highlights from his video message included the value of innovation spurred by entrepreneurs and the phenomenal growth of the worldwide network.

Ortmans extended an invitation for locals to join him in MEDELLÍN in 2016 for the international conference scheduled for March 14 - 17. Welsh expressed thanks to the sponsors, FND Credit Union and St. Kitts Investment Promotion Agency for making the events possible.
