BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - IN their continuous efforts to rid the twin-island Federation of illegal drugs, members of the Security Forces uprooted approximately 239 marijuana plants in Phillip’s Village.

Information reaching this publication, which was confirmed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Ian Queeley, states that a joint operation was launched yesterday (Dec. 1) in Phillip's Village by members of the Police and Defence Forces and it resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of marijuana plants.

Asked to provide details of the operation, Queeley referred this media house to Sergeant Carl Greaux, the Officer-in-Charge of Cayon Police Station, who said the operation was conducted by a female Constable under his command and three members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force.

“The joint operation was conducted between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. yesterday in the Phillip’s area, which resulted in the officers finding and uprooting 239 marijuana plants ranging from seedlings to four feet in height.

He said the plants were taken into custody but no one has so far been held responsible.

The Sergeant was high in praise of the Constable and urged all other females in the Force who have never been on such operations to emulate her in the fight against crime.

“In this Division, we, the Commander, all officers at the Cayon Police Station and I, intend to work assiduously with our limited resources not only in the fight against crime, but also in the protection of all residents and visitors.

“It is not an easy task but we are trained to carry out our mandate, and we will do so with a high degree of commitment and professionalism. However, though a relatively good relationship exists between us here at the Cayon Police Station and members of the community, the need still arises for more people to be aware of the crime situation and use the Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 (TIPS) to tell what they saw,” Sergeant Greaux explained.

So far for this year, with the exclusion of this recent seizure, the Security Forces have seized some 830 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of EC$11.265M, and 10.522 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of EC$447,790.
