Guns Don't Kill

Adam Anderson

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS A social media user, I come across topical posts and quips from friends and family.  Today something triggered a rant within.  Pardon me while I share. The recent mass murder in Southern California has captured the news and provoked deeper thought.

CNN reports yesterday, “Tashfeen Malik and her husband, Syed Rizwan Farook, sprayed bullets at Farook's co-workers at a holiday party for the environmental health department in San Bernardino before being gunned down in a shootout with authorities the same day.”

Before this disturbing news, there was news from Paris. Before this there was news of the downed airliner in Egypt.

The trend is clear.  The trend is real. The trend will continue until the hearts of men turn to God.  Be-it abroad or here in St. Kitts and Nevis. Today is Sunday and a time to strengthen our resolve.

This recent tragedy, horrid as it is, is one of several mass murders that have, over time, desensitised Americans to the real issue.  And in response to gun control? Social posts such as, “The gun has the same problem as the spoon that made me fat - it’s how it is used”.

    Really?

SKNVibes is reporting on yet another Federation murder.

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE life of yet another young man was snuffed out this morning (Dec. 5) during an altercation allegedly took place at one of the popular hangouts at the Frigate Bay Strip. The victim, has been identified as Travis ‘Gangsta Fat’ Hanley of Half Way Tree.

Travis is not just another statistic, he is a mother’s son, he is a soul that had real potential, now Travis’s life has left along with the peace of those who love him.

Too often we simply read the news and push the pain aside.  As long as the news pertains to someone else's child.

We can each make a difference. Today.

A call for enlightened minds, hearts, and souls to awaken is now before us. This Sabbath day, let’s reflect on our Purpose and relationship with God.  It’s a time to feel His Love and to know that where much is given, much is also required — from each of us.

My Facebook response to the ‘spoon’ comment follows.

    — begin post

And how are spoons and guns being used? To carry out hate crime and build epidemic and alarming health risks of obesity, heart disease, and cancer.

So let's continue the trend... let's continue to die as we numb ourselves away from values that teach how to live well and love each other… let us allow the media to continue to drive us into a McDonalds drive-up, and let's let ISIS in through social media to radicalise our youth.  We should elevate and awaken ourselves to the real issue... the numbers do not lie. Civil liberties (our very freedoms) continue to erode as we treat the symptoms, not the cause. If you take a stand for guns you must also take a stand to restore principles and values that teach love over hate. We are killing ourselves and each other as we have slowly become numbed down.  Our society has removed God from school, home, and society. And God has been twisted in the hearts of men.  And all we can say is ,“guns don’t kill?”

    — end post

There is real power is prayer. There is real power in faith. There is transformative power in each of our voices. But perhaps the greatest power, resides in our Will and determination to take action, to set and be an example to an at-risk youth in the neighbourhood. To actually become invested in positive change.

Does a name of a child come to mind now?  … ponder it more.

Great.  Now, shut the computer down and go make a visit.  I can only imagine it is precisely what Jesus would be doing.

    Let’s do this together!
